Extraction and Manufacturing: Marble quarries have been in operation since nearly 4000 BC, even before the use of hardened metals. Quarrying methods have evolved very little over the centuries, until the development of industrial techniques in the 20th century. These techniques allowed for the cost-effective extraction of large quantities of rock. Low-compression explosives and motorized extraction methods are now used to extract enormous blocks of marble near the surface. These blocks are then shipped by truck or train from the quarry to a factory, where they are cut into slabs of the desired thickness. Each slab is then processed with automated equipment to achieve the desired finish. Due to the extreme hardness of marble, most of the processing requires the use of diamond-tipped blades or slurries containing metallic abrasives, significantly increasing the production cost of the final product. However, recent advances in quarrying and manufacturing processes now allow manufacturers to offer marble products at a price equivalent to, or even lower than, that of manufactured products imitating marble.
